Outdoor Tile Repair

Outdoor Tile Repair Without Demolition

You walk across the patio and a tile shifts underfoot. Tap it and it sounds hollow. Along one edge of the alfresco area, a row of tiles has started to lift and peak in the middle. Outdoor tiles take more punishment than any other tiled surface on a property, and when they lose their bond, the usual advice is to rip the area up and start again. There is a better way. Drummy Repair re-bonds loose, hollow and drummy outdoor tiles in place by injecting a low-viscosity, structural-grade epoxy through the grout lines, so the tiles you already have go back to being solid underfoot.

Outdoor Tile Repair

Re-Bonded In Place. No Replacement Needed.

Replacing an outdoor area is a big job. The tiles come up, the bed comes off, the area is out of use for a week or more, and the tiles you have chosen may no longer be made. Epoxy injection takes a different route. Small access points are made through the existing grout lines, the epoxy is injected into the voids beneath the tile, and it spreads until it makes full contact with both the tile and the substrate before curing. The bond that failed is restored, the hollow sound goes, and the surface stays exactly as it looks now.

The method works on floors and walls, on residential and commercial properties, and across a wide range of materials, including but not limited to ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone.

  • Precision Re-Bonding: Structural-grade epoxy injected into the voids, restoring adhesion between tile and substrate.
  • No Demolition, No Mess: Repairs happen through the grout lines. No jackhammers, no tile saws, no skip bin in the driveway.
  • Visually Seamless: Your existing tiles stay in place, so there is no colour or batch matching to worry about.
  • Cost-Effective: A fraction of the cost of lifting and relaying an outdoor area.

Why Outdoor Tiles Lift, Tent and Go Drummy

Sun, Movement and Moisture, Explained

Outdoor tiles fail for reasons indoor tiles largely do not, which is why so many patios and balconies develop problems while the tiles inside the house stay solid.

Heat cycling. An external tiled surface expands in the sun and contracts as it cools, every day, all year. That constant movement works away at the bond between the tile and the bed beneath it. Over time, the adhesive gives up in patches, and those patches are what you hear when you tap a tile and get a hollow, drum-like sound.

Missing or undersized movement joints. Tiling needs somewhere to absorb that expansion. The QBCC standards and tolerances guide sets out where movement and control joints are required under AS 3958.1, and external floors are treated more strictly than internal ones: a joint is required where any dimension of the floor exceeds 4.5 metres, evenly spaced at 4.5 metre centres. Plenty of patios and balconies were laid as one continuous field of tile with nothing but a perimeter of grout to absorb the movement. When there is nowhere for the pressure to go, it lifts the tiles instead.

Tile tenting. This is the extreme version. Compression builds across a run of tiles with no relief, and eventually a row pops upward off the substrate and peaks like a tent. Tenting almost always announces itself first as drummy tiles along the same line, which is why a hollow sound outdoors is worth acting on rather than living with.

Moisture under the tile. Rain, irrigation and washdown water find their way into grout lines and edges, and an outdoor bed does not dry the way an internal one does. Moisture sitting between the tile and the substrate weakens the bond and accelerates everything above.

Substrate and structural movement. Slabs settle, balcony structures deflect, and new work moves over time. The tile is rigid, so when what is underneath it moves, the bond is the thing that breaks.

Our Outdoor Tile Repair Process

01

Contact & Quote

Send us photos or a short video of the affected area and we can quote from that in most cases. Where the scope calls for it, we arrange an on-site inspection, sound out the full area to map every drummy tile, and give you a clear quote covering the solution, timing and cost.

02

Schedule & Prepare

Once the quote is approved, we book a time that suits you and let you know the simple prep steps, usually just clearing outdoor furniture and pots from the area.

03

Precision Epoxy Injection Repair

Our technicians make small access points through the grout lines and inject the epoxy into the voids beneath the tiles. It spreads under the tile, makes full contact with the substrate, and cures to re-bond the tile from below. Smaller repairs can take only a few hours, while larger areas take longer, and we give you clear timeframes upfront so you know what to expect.

04

Completion & Care

We check the repaired area, confirm the hollow sound is gone, and let you know when the surface is ready for normal use. Outdoor areas are typically walkable within around 24 hours of the epoxy curing, or as advised by your technician.

Where We Repair Outdoor Tiles

Patios & Entertaining Areas

The most common outdoor call-out we get. Large tiled areas in full sun, in constant use, where a single moving tile is both an irritation and a trip hazard.

Balconies & Terraces

Elevated tiled areas move more than a slab on ground, and access for a full replacement is difficult and expensive. Injection avoids the demolition entirely, which matters in units and townhouses where getting materials in and rubble out is the hardest part of the job.

Alfresco Areas & Outdoor Kitchens

Tiles that run from an indoor living space out under a roofline sit across two very different environments, and the transition is where the bond often fails first. Built-in kitchens and benches also make replacement expensive, because the tiles run underneath them.

Entries, Steps & Paths

Loose tiles on a step or an entry are a safety issue before they are a cosmetic one, and they are usually a small, quick job to put right.

Don't Replace. Repair.

When Tile Repair Isn't the Right Solution Outdoors

Part of doing this properly is telling you when it is not the right fix, and outdoor areas have a few genuine limits worth knowing before you spend anything.

Epoxy injection re-bonds tiles that have lost their grip but are still intact. If a tile is already cracked, chipped or broken, injection will not put it back together, and that is a different job to the one we do. Areas with pooling water are also outside what we take on, because water sitting on the surface works against the repair.

The most important limit is this: injection restores adhesion, it does not correct a failed waterproofing membrane or a moving substrate. On balconies in particular, a failed membrane is often the real cause, and re-bonding the tiles without addressing it only treats the symptom. When we inspect your area, we sound it out and try to identify the cause. We will always be upfront with you, as we don’t believe in taking your money for a repair that isn’t going to provide a lasting result.

And while no repair can guarantee against future substrate failure or structural movement, a properly applied injection significantly reduces the risk of the problem returning.

Outdoor Tile Repair vs Full Replacement

Replacement means the tiles come up, the bed comes off, the area is unusable for days, and you are buying new tiles and paying for the labour to lay them. It also means matching, which is where outdoor projects come unstuck: exterior tiles and natural stone are frequently a discontinued batch, so a partial replacement rarely blends and you end up redoing the whole area to keep it consistent.

Repair keeps the tiles you chose, at a fraction of the cost of full replacement, with your outdoor area back in use in a fraction of the time. If you can hear the problem but cannot see it, repair is almost always the better call.

Already Cracked, Chipped or Broken Tiles

Injection re-bonds tiles that have lost their grip but are still intact, not tiles that are already broken.

Areas With Pooling Water

Water sitting on the surface works against the repair, so these areas fall outside what we take on.

Failed Waterproofing Membranes

Injection restores adhesion, not a failed membrane or moving substrate. On balconies especially, a failed membrane is often the real cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know tile issues can be confusing or stressful. That’s why we’ve answered some of the most common questions we hear from clients.

Why are my outdoor tiles lifting and sounding hollow?

Almost always because the bond between the tile and the substrate has failed. Outdoors, the usual drivers are heat cycling in the sun, movement joints that were never installed or were spaced too far apart, moisture getting under the tile bed, and movement in the slab or structure beneath. A hollow sound when you tap the tile is the first sign, and it usually appears well before anything is visibly wrong. Our guide to what causes hollow sounding tiles goes through the causes in more detail.

Yes, and that is the entire point of the method. We inject a structural-grade epoxy through the existing grout lines to re-bond the tile from beneath. The tiles stay where they are, the grout lines stay intact, and there is no demolition, dust or replacement tile to source.

Tenting is when compression across a tiled area has nowhere to go and a row of tiles lifts off the substrate and peaks upward. It is the visible end point of a problem that usually starts as drummy tiles along the same line. Whether injection is the right fix depends on what the tiles have done and whether they are still intact, so send us photos and we will tell you honestly what you are looking at.

Yes. Patios, balconies, terraces, alfresco areas, entries and steps are all part of what we do, on both residential and commercial properties. Elevated areas are where the savings are largest, because full replacement on a balcony carries access and disposal costs that a repair avoids completely.

Most residential jobs are completed in approximately a day or two, depending on scope. Smaller repairs can take only a few hours, while larger areas take longer, and we give you clear timeframes upfront. Surfaces are typically walkable within around 24 hours of the epoxy curing.

They can be. The QBCC standards and tolerances guide treats loose tiles as defective within the first 12 months from completion of the work, and for up to 6 years and 6 months from completion where they allow water penetration into the building or compromise the health and safety of the people using it. Whether that applies to your property depends on your circumstances and is a question for the QBCC, not for us. What we can tell you is what is actually happening under your tiles.

Considerably. Repair is a fraction of the cost of full tile replacement, because it avoids demolition, disposal, new tiles and the labour to lay them. Send through photos or a short video of the area and we will give you a no-obligation quote so you can compare the two properly.
